Chair, There and Everywhere

Wow, it’s been awhile, hasn’t it? Like we said, big projects have really slowed down around here, and between the holidays, work, traveling all the time to see family and friends, we just haven’t gotten around to posting. But, you’re in for a treat because all that time off from posting means we’ve got a little extra material to share with you, so there will be another post coming from Andrew pretty soon after this one! Let’s get to it…

Seating has always been a predicament in our tiny house. You may remember when we decided to part ways with our love seat as Part 1 of turning the office into a guest room. Well ever since then, we have to admit, we’ve missed the additional seating. If it’s just me and Andrew, the main couch is perfect. But if we have guests, it could be a little awkward to squeeze them in the middle of the couch between us. We love our friends, but seriously, that’s just a little too close for anyone’s normal comfort level.

First of all, neither of us could stand the fact that our desk chair was on wheels, scraping up our pretty floors that are, in the grand scheme of things, still in their infancy. We had been looking for a better desk chair that wasn’t on wheels, but nothing seemed to really call to us. In a chair, we like comfort, but style as well…we wouldn’t settle for just a cheap folding chair. Most chairs online and even at Ikea were just a little too high in price. I mean, come on, it’s a chair!

Long story short, we noticed some pretty cool chairs pop up at Target that seemed perfect and they were only just about $30. We jumped right on this since we knew something like this would sell out quickly. It’s a good thing we did because they were gone by the following week! Meet our new desk chair:

Not only did we get a new desk chair, but we also decided to add a new comfy chair to the living room AND even a new slipper chair in our bedroom! We found these beauties on Wayfair.com.New denim lounge comfy chair from Wayfair Our new slipper chair

Now we have another seat in the living room and this one was SO easy to put together; it took about 5 minutes. This makes room for 6 in the living room right now with the new desk chair, old Ikea chair (now fashioned with some lovely accents), the new comfy chair and the couch.
Maximizing living room space with seating

As for the new slipper chair in our bedroom, that was an offer I just couldn’t refuse. We also got this chair from Wayfair, on sale for just $89. Most slipper chairs we were seeing were well over $100 a pop. I am constantly frustrated with the lack of places to put things in our bedroom. We have my dresser, but the cable box for our TV lives there and that really limits my surface space. I really wanted a chair that would fit in without taking up too much space, so that I could lay out my clothes for the next day or just sit down while I tie my shoes. These were just minor annoyances, but adding the chair has been great. I was worried it would be too cluttered in such a small room, but I think it is just fine and it gets the job done, that’s for sure. Our new slipper chair

We O.D.’d on chairs and we don’t care! Now we have more seats for our guests and nice accents, to boot!

Dressed to Kill…or to Be Really Organized

We have officially stepped up our organizational/storage game. Last weekend, we were traveling to Jersey City for a friend’s birthday and we couldn’t resist a “quick” pit stop at good old IKEA in Elizabeth, NJ (the closest IKEA to us). As I mentioned in my last post, (which you can read here), we devised a plan for moving our dressers around + purchasing a new one to create more storage space. Here’s a quick re-cap:

We had 1 dresser in our office dedicated to a lot of Andrew’s clothes.

We had another dresser in our bedroom, which was for my clothes:

The idea was to move the dresser in the bedroom, into the office, and place the 2 IKEA Malm dressers on one of the larger walls in our office, pictured here with the keyboard, pre-move:

We purchased 1 new, 4-drawer IKEA Malm dresser for the bedroom. So I have gained 1 drawer and Andrew has technically gained 3! Wall space in our bedroom is limited, so we figured if we can’t go out, go up! The 4-drawer IKEA Malm dresser was just the right height to fit right under our wall-mounted TV, so we didn’t have to move that at all (whew)! Here’s what the bedroom dresser setup looks like now:

Is it me, or does the room somehow look bigger?? You probably can’t really tell from this picture, but for some reason, this dresser makes things feel a bit roomier. Maybe because it’s taller than the previous it’s drawing my eyes up, creating the illusion of more space? Or maybe I’m just lost in space, who knows…either way, I love it! My things are at a better level and, of course, I gained an extra drawer. Now I can stop over-stuffing drawers and lay my clothes neatly…at least until I go on another shopping spree.

As for the office, the new setup looks like this, ‘music nook’ and dressers on the inside wall, respectively:

This I really love! We have definitely lost some floor space in this scenario, but this just makes more sense to me. I think this wall was meant to have these dressers spanning the greater part of it. In addition to gaining 3 more drawers in this room, we have also gained some more surfaces. I can’t wait to spice this space up with a little more decor. We’ve got some great plans for the surface of the dressers, as well as the wall space above them. As of right now, we’re thinking of definitely adding a table runner across the width of the dressers. Then maybe some new framed artwork and some other decorative finds. For the wall, we’re definitely thinking of finding a cheap/old mirror to gussy up and eventually hang above, maybe with some other accents around?? We’re not quite sure yet, but we’re pretty excited about this new take on the office.

Stick with us as we make more DIY and design decisions in our Fresh Nest! Andrew’s got a great post coming up about a project he tackled recently. All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go…

Until now! I guess it’s pretty true that with a new year comes new changes. I had another epiphany recently; not another living room epiphany, (although that was a pretty awesome one that you can read about here), but a dresser epiphany.

One of the biggest challenges in our house is storage. Like most older homes, closet space is very limited in our house, so we’re always looking for new storage solutions. There is currently 1 dresser in our bedroom that’s filled with all of my clothes. Andrew’s dresser is in our office. He uses the office closet and I use the bedroom closet. It works out pretty well anyway; since Andrew gets up so early for work, it gives him a separate space to get ready. This way he doesn’t feel as though he’s bothering me while I catch some extra ‘Zzzz’.

But anyway, back to the epiphany…in our previous apartments, we were able to put our 2, 3-drawer Ikea dressers side by side. There’s enough room in the office to do this now, but not in the bedroom, so why not go up? The plan right now is to purchase 1 new Ikea (Malm) dresser for our bedroom, but this time we’ll get the larger, 4-drawer guy. Then the 3-drawer that’s currently in the bedroom, will get booted to the office, where it can live side by side with its mate, the other 3-drawer. Here’s what the current setup looks like:

Bedroom:

Office:

With the new, proposed arrangement, I will gain 1 extra drawer and Andrew will actually gain 3 (but we may share a few or use a couple for storing other items that are currently taking up space in our office closets).

All we need to do is re-arrange the office a bit. The 2, 3-drawer dressers will live on the big wall that currently serves as a space for our keyboard. The keyboard will move over to where the 3-drawer dresser currently is, and voila! We’ll be ‘dressed’ to kill.

Stay tuned because in the coming weeks, we’ll most likely have a follow-up to this post so you can see the new arrangement. In the meantime, definitely don’t forget to LIKE us on Facebook to see what we’re up to and Follow me (Megan) on Pinterest to see where all of our inspiration is coming from!
