Curtain Call

When we moved into our house just under 2 years ago, the living room was one of the first rooms to be painted. From there, we quickly purchased and hung new faux wood blinds, as well as some white curtains. I’ve never been thrilled with shorter curtains, but because we have baseboard heaters, I always felt like we shouldn’t have long, floor-length curtains. Boy was I wrong. Here’s a quick preview of the before and after:

Before and after, modified 84 inch curtains

There are so many options for hanging curtains, you should never have to limit yourself. I have seen other people hang floor-length curtains in homes with baseboard heaters, so it shouldn’t be an issue. However, I decided to come up with an easy solution that would allow me to have the 84 inch curtains I really wanted. Thus, I give you…

How to Modify 84 inch Curtains with NO Sewing and Just 4 Simple Steps

You will need:

  • 84 inch (or any length, really) pocket rod curtains
  • 1 pack curtain clip rings per curtain (in my case, it was 4 curtains, 4 sets of clip rings, 7 in a pack)
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Tape measure

1. Iron curtains – This is the first time in the past 5 years of apartment/home living for me that I have actually decided to iron my curtains and it really paid off. Continue reading to learn why this is so important, but trust me, you do not want to skip this step!

Ironing curtains2. Use your ironing board as a sort of staging area to fold the top of your curtains down as much as you would like to modify the length. In my case, I knew I wanted to modify the 84 inch curtains by about 10 inches.

3. Open 1 pack of clip rings and lay them out along your curtain to get an idea for spacing. Ensure the clip rings will be evenly spaced and then clip!

4. Hang your curtain and repeat as needed, depending on how many curtains you are modifying.

Modify 84 inch curtains, hang and style like a pro

No sewing needed whatsoever and utilizing the curtain clip rings allows you to make the curtains any length you want. You can’t even tell they have been modified and, in my case, they are right above my baseboard heaters, just where I wanted them.

Now, why was it so important to iron the curtains? First of all, they definitely look so much better when they are ironed, that’s obvious. But what’s really important is, ironing the curtains allowed me to really style them like a pro. To achieve the clean, sophisticated look seen here, I pinched the curtains at the very top between each clip ring and followed the fold all the way down to the bottom.

Creating this accordion-like effect really makes the curtains look like curtains and not just wrinkly sheets tossed up on a curtain rod.

Curtain clip rings really are the answer to curtain modification as far as I’m concerned. I don’t own a sewing machine and I’ve used “no -ew” products, but nothing works quite as well as the curtain clip ring method! Now, in the future, I can have my 84 inch curtains or I can modify again to any length I’d like.

We Love Lamp

We’ve been super busy lately, and our latest design decisions have not been easy. Have you ever tried so hard to make something work, that in the end, you just end up right back where you started? We had a weekend like that recently and it involved several lamps.

Our house is old and lacks the light we crave. Also, as a rule, we usually avoid anything that has to do with electrical. So that leaves us with some lighting issues. Our living room could definitely be brighter, so we thought, ‘okay, add a lamp. Easy right’? WRONG.

We set off in search of a new floor lamp, thinking that we would just have our table lamp and 2 floor lamps; 1 floor lamp on either side of the living room, in opposite corners. Our challenge was that we didn’t want to buy the same cheap-o floor lamp from Target a second time; we wanted something new and exciting. Our big fear with this was that it would look like we just had 3 random lamps sitting around the room, which, in reality, is exactly what it would have looked like. However, you’ll be pleased to know that in the end, our living room is still just a slightly-too-dark, 2 lamp living room. But we love it because we did get this brand new, awesome, designery lamp from Traget:

New Target Lamp

I won’t bore you with all the details, but as a 3rd lighting option for this room, we bought a floor lamp from Lowe’s that looked like this:

Lowes Shelf Lamp

We thought that if we added a 3rd, wild card kind of lamp, it would look purposeful and not like we were just throwing another random lamp in the room. This turned out to be a disaster because poor Andrew put the entire lamp together and when we plugged it in, it had this awful yellow glow to it. It didn’t match the temperature of any other light in our entire house and, quite frankly, it just wouldn’t do. Sooooo…Andrew took the entire thing apart and we returned it.

Later on, we spent the greater part of an evening playing with lamps in the lighting aisles of Target. We were putting lamps inside of things, on top of things, thinking of building something ourselves that would fashion a table lamp into a floor lamp…yea, things got real weird. In the end, we knew that we couldn’t just get another random floor lamp, so we figured we would have to get another table lamp to match the new one we had purchased earlier that day. (Yes, we went to Target 4 times that day. No, we’re not ashamed). We knew we didn’t want to purchase another end table because the one we have now that’s from Ikea was actually 100 bucks and we just don’t feel like spending that much on another end table. We thought maybe if we put a 2nd, matching table lamp, up high, on a $20 Target bookshelf in the corner, maybe that would make sense.

In retrospect, I’m really glad we didn’t do that. It’s obviously a crazy shot in the dark (haha, lighting humor), that would have probably ended with another put-it-together-take-it-apart-return-it kind of situation and I just couldn’t put Andrew through that again. 🙂

At the end of the day, we decided just to do nothing. Nothing at all. After all of that contemplating and scheming, we just did nothing. I’m actually happier this way, because I think adding another element to the room would have been a big mistake. I actually think we are a little too obsessed with drawing more light into the living room. The way it’s lit now is actually very cozy, and I don’t think we really want to mess with that. Maybe a new idea will strike us a month from now and it will actually make sense, but for now, we’re a 2-lamp living room kind of people and we’re loving it.

Crafting

This weekend. We decided to get a little crafty. Well, rather, I decided to get a little crafty and drag Andrew along with me. As many of you already know, I’m addicted to Pinterest. I have found tons of great inspiration for our house by pinning, and I have also found a lot of great DIY tutorials. I decided to take on two projects this weekend; one for me and one for us. The first was a DIY bracelet project. I got some string, leather cording and chain and made these awesome bracelets.

The second, arguably more exciting, project was making these DIY painted vases. We picked up a few of these little vases from Michael’s and grabbed a few bottles of Martha Stewart’s acrylic paint. Yes there were even cheaper paints, but even Andrew had to admit that Martha’s colors were pretty good!

This project was super simple and fun. We just poured a bunch of paint into the bottom of each vase, then turned them upside down to let the paint drip down the sides of the glass.

Drying Acrylic Paint Bottles

We left the vases flipped over for awhile as the excess paint dripped down. Once the vases were completely covered with paint, we flipped them back over to air dry. The paint was quite gloppy so we’re actually still in the process of drying them, but this was a fun little weekend project. Once they’re all dry, they’ll go on display somewhere in the house. We’re thinking of hanging some cool floating shelves in the dining room so we can display a few things and the colored vases may be a great fit!
